Les tracteurs rail-route sont conçus pour quitter la voie ferrée et passer à la route, sur cour, sur terre-plein, pour des manœuvres rapides qui économisent des temps souvent considérables. Le changement ne prend que quelques secondes; l'engin se soulève grâce à un pied de levage et d'orientation actionné hydrauliquement; la rotation peut être de 180 degrés. Ceci permet de dégager les tracteurs-locomotives risquant de se trouver bloqués entre deux trains ou au milieu d'une rame.
